《大家的日本語》的對象，是在職場、家庭、學校、生活中等需要使用日語進行溝通的外國人。雖然是初級教材，但是在豋場的外國人和日本人進行交流的場面中，都盡量反映了日本情事和日本人的社會生活和日常生活。
本書以一般社會大眾為對象，但是當然也可以作為上大學的預備課程，或專門學校、大學的短期集中授課用的教材。
《大家的日本語初級 I+II》課文收錄《大家的日本語》全套課程的1-25課，索引部分有新單字、表現片語、最初出現的課數也一併載出。
《大家的日本語初級 I+II》文法解說、課文中譯、問題解答的合訂本。文法解說書內容包含日語特徵、日語文字、日語發音的說明，關於句型及表現的文法說明，及對該課學習有助益的參考語彙和日本情事的簡單介紹；課文中譯、問題解答內容包含「課本」中的「教室用語」以及「每天的招呼語和會話表現」的翻譯，「課本」最後的助詞、活用形用法，副詞以及接續詞等歸納的翻譯，句型、例句、會話的中文翻譯，及「問題」單元中有聽寫問題、文法問題和閱讀問題解答。
《大家的日本語初級 I+II》有聲CD包含課文各單元發聲的錄音，方便聽講寫讀的全面綀習。
